HSDPA Technology

What is HSDPA

High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is also known as High-Speed Downlink Protocol Access. HSDPA is a protocol for mobile telephones. It is a third-generation (3G) High-Speed Packet Access technology designed to speed up network capacity and data transmission rate of cellular phone.

Current HSDPA Technology

At present, there are 100 HSDPA-capable networks operating in 54 countries worldwide. A large number of these networks offer 3.6 Mbps downlink speeds. However, more networks are beginning to switch to faster 7.2 Mbps downlink speeds. Only a number of networks presently offer a full 14.4 Mbps speed
HSDPA competes with a rival format, the Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) provided by Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular providers.

HSDPA Capable Devices

Aside from having a cellular plan with a company offering HSDPA access, the only requirement for logging into the HSDPA network is having a cellular device capable of using the technology. A current total of 171 handset models and other mobile devices can use an HSDPA network. Some of these HSDPA capable devices are famous cellular brand and model names such as the Nokia N95, the Palm Treo 750, and the Motorola RAZR as well as many of its various versions.

In addition to the various HSDPA handsets in the market, several HSDPA notebooks and laptops with access to the data network are available. Such products are offered by several major computer manufacturers including Dell, Acer, Hewlett-Packard, Siemens, Fujitsu, Panasonic, and Lenovo.

Future HSDPA Technology

Although 14.4 Mbps is the current cap on downlink speed over HSDPA, networks are preparing to be upgraded with a new type of HSDPA system. Dubbed as HSPA Evolved, this new HSDPA technology is designed to increase download speeds to 42 Mbps upon release, with the possibility of reaching greater speed values in the future.
A wide variety of Wi-Fiare available. These tools for Wi-Fi perform functions such as:
• Wireless network discovery
• Wireless network mapping
• Wireless network traffic analysis
• Wireless network RF signal strength monitoring
• Wireless network encryption cracking
• Wireless network custom frame generation
• Dictionary or brute forceattacks against wireless networks
• Denial of Service (DoS) attacks against wirless network.

HSCSD vs. GPRS

HSCSD has an advantage over GPRS in that HSCSD supports guaranteed quality of service because of the dedicated circuit-switched communinations channel. This makes HSCSD a better protocol for timing-sensitive applications such as image or video transfer.

GPRS has the advantage over HSCSD for most data transfer because HSCSD, which is circuit-switched, is less bandwidth efficient with expensive wireless links than GPRS, which is packet-switched.

Due to this, HSCSD is not as widespread as GPRS. HSCSD is, however, currently available in over 27 countries.
HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) is a specification for data transfer over GSM networks. HSCSD utilizes up to four 9.6Kb or 14.4Kb time slots, for a total bandwidth of 38.4Kb or 57.6Kb.

14.4Kb time slots are only available on GSM networks that operate at 1,800MHz. 900Mhz GSM networks are limited to 9.6Kb time slots. Therefore, HSCSD is limited to 38.4Kbps on 900Mhz GSM networks. HSCSD can nly achieve 57.6Kbps on 1,800Mhz GSM
networks.

WiMAX Bandwidth and Range

WiMAX has a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 75Mbps. This bandwidth can be achieved using 64QAM 3/4 modulation. 64QAM can only be utilized under optimal transmission conditions. WiMAX supports the use of a wide range of modulation algorithms to enable the most bandwidth to be realized under all conditions.
WiMAX has a theoretical maximum range of 31 miles with a direct line of sight. Near-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions will seriously limit the potential range.
In addition, some of the frequencies utilized by WiMAX are subject to interference from rainfade. The unlicensed WiMAX frequencies are subject to RF interference from competing technologies and competing WiMAX networks.
